Goals
Attract and recruit underrepresented students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics;
Ensure graduation rates in A.A. programs;
Promote student transfer to four-year institutions and assure student success in their respective STEM careers.
To accomplish these goals, the program will provide MDC-Wolfson and Kendall students the high-quality instruction,
advisement, technology, and economical assistance to prepare them for the completion of their STEM degrees at
four-year colleges and universities. These goals will be accomplished through the following strategies:
Strategies
Excite students about studying and working in STEM fields
Create a welcoming environment for all students
Help students create a vision for themselves in successful STEM careers
Build a sense of community through learning communities, peer mentoring, faculty/staff support
Closely monitor the progress of all students, identify and implement needed interventions
Emphasize that pursuing a career in STEM is enjoyable, feasible and rewarding
Provide specialized advisement and regular monitoring of students
Hold science forums to expose students to notable scientists working both in academia and industry
Facilitate peer mentoring programs where alumni and second-year students mentor younger students
Offer transfer scholarships and application-process assistance
Provide access beyond graduation from MDC to mentors for advice and assistance as student pursue their B.S.
degrees and STEM careers
