Goals

  1. Attract and recruit underrepresented students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics;
  2. Ensure graduation rates in A.A. programs;
  3. Promote student transfer to four-year institutions and assure student success in their respective STEM careers.

To accomplish these goals, the program will provide MDC-Wolfson and Kendall students the high-quality instruction, advisement, technology, and economical assistance to prepare them for the completion of their STEM degrees at four-year colleges and universities.  These goals will be accomplished through the following strategies:

Strategies

    • Excite students about studying and working in STEM fields
    • Create a welcoming environment for all students
    • Help students create a vision for themselves in successful STEM careers
    • Build a sense of community through learning communities, peer mentoring, faculty/staff support
    • Closely monitor the progress of all students, identify and implement needed interventions
    • Emphasize that pursuing a career in STEM is enjoyable, feasible and rewarding
    • Provide specialized advisement and regular monitoring of students
    • Hold science forums to expose students to notable scientists working both in academia and industry
    • Facilitate peer mentoring programs where alumni and second-year students mentor younger students
    • Offer transfer scholarships and application-process assistance
    • Provide access beyond graduation from MDC to mentors for advice and assistance as student pursue their B.S. degrees and STEM careers
