Tools for Success Program Goals & Strategies
Goals
- Attract and recruit underrepresented students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics;
- Ensure graduation rates in A.A. programs;
- Promote student transfer to four-year institutions and assure student success in their respective STEM careers.
To accomplish these goals, the program will provide MDC-Wolfson and Kendall students the high-quality instruction, advisement, technology, and economical assistance to prepare them for the completion of their STEM degrees at four-year colleges and universities. These goals will be accomplished through the following strategies:
Strategies
- Excite students about studying and working in STEM fields
- Create a welcoming environment for all students
- Help students create a vision for themselves in successful STEM careers
- Build a sense of community through learning communities, peer mentoring, faculty/staff support
- Closely monitor the progress of all students, identify and implement needed interventions
- Emphasize that pursuing a career in STEM is enjoyable, feasible and rewarding
- Provide specialized advisement and regular monitoring of students
- Hold science forums to expose students to notable scientists working both in academia and industry
- Facilitate peer mentoring programs where alumni and second-year students mentor younger students
- Offer transfer scholarships and application-process assistance
- Provide access beyond graduation from MDC to mentors for advice and assistance as student pursue their B.S. degrees and STEM careers
