Tyler spent six weeks during the summer of 2008 as a participant in a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship sponsored by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.  This experience had Tyler working elbow to elbow with renowned scientists in a National laboratory to study the transport properties and operating lifetimes of organic semiconductors; a study that will one day reshape the electronic industry.

Like Tyler, Jonathan spent six weeks during the summer of 2008 as a participant in a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship sponsored by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.  Jonathan worked alongside several of the nation’s top scientists in developing a test bed that will provide the measurement tools necessary for testing the performance of new construction technologies such as robots, positioning systems and information exchange protocols.

Program:  SURF NIST BOULDER
This summer, Amberly will participate in the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program for students majoring in science, mathematics, and engineering.  Like Tyler and Jonathan, Amberly will spend six weeks working alongside renowned scientists in a national laboratory in Boulder, Colorado.  Amberly’s research will involve making tissue engineered platforms to test the affect of nanoparticles on neurological systems.  This type of research can answer questions regarding the alleged link between cellular telephones and brain tumors.

Major: Civil Engineering
Expected Graduation: Spring 2010
Program:  Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Harvard SEEDS
Eva will be serving an internship this summer in the Civil Engineering Department of the Lawrence Berkely National Laboratory (LBNL) in Berkeley, CA.  Eva has a strong interst in sustainability and other issues pertaining to the preservation of our environment.  At LBNL she will be participating in the Hyperbrit Project where she will be evaluating different structures around Berkely and the impact they have on the environment. Eva also participated in the Harvard SEEDs Field trip in October 2008.  SEEDs is a program that is sposored by Harvard University and the Ecological Society of America to study the impact our society’s infrastructure has on the natural enviroment.

Major: Environmental Sciences
Program:  US Fish and Wildlife Service
Emily will be participating in a Student Conservation Association and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Internship this summer.  This program provides paid internships for college students from ethnically and culturally diverse backgrounds who are pursing degrees in the biological sciences and natural resource fields.  These internships are designed to provide students with the opportunity to learn about conservation, science, management and careers through real world research and communication projects.  Emily will be spending 12 weeks at the Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge in Maine.  70% of her time will involve invasive plant study and monitoring.  The remaining time will be spent in other scientific activities where she will be exposed to other aspects of refuge operations.

Program:  Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP)
SMDEP is a free (full tuition, housing, and meals) summer academic enrichment program that offers freshman and sophomore college students intensive and personalized medical and dental school preparation.  Alyssa will study for six-weeks during the summer of 2009 at the University of Texas in Houston.
